Important Dates

1738 - First known house built in Bedford County, by trader John Patton. The house still stands in present day Everett.

1750 - Robert MacRay establishes a trading post along the river. It becomes known as Raytown, now Bedford.

1758 - Forbes Road
------------------------------

1758 - Fort Bedford built by the British army, commanded by General Edward Forbes.

1760 – Bloody Run Massacre

------------------------------

1770-  Betsy Tussey’s tavern established

------------------------------

1771 - Bedford County officially formed.

------------------------------

1774 - Public road opened from Standing Stone (now Huntingdon) to Bloody Run (now Everett). This road is now Route 26.

------------------------------

1787 - Michael Barndollar of Frederick County, Maryland, was given a deed from John Musser of Lancaster, PA, for 400 acres of land, the present site of Everett.

1791 - Public road opened from Shippensburg to Pittsburgh. It followed the route of Forbes' Road

------------------------------

1795 - Michael Barndollar lays out the town first called Waynesboro, but the post office was called Bloody Run. (Presently Everett)

------------------------------

1801 - First iron production in Bedford County begins at Hopewell Furnace, with iron ore from Warrior Ridge near present day Everett.

------------------------------

1802 - Michael Barndollar built a tavern and store at present day Everett.

------------------------------

1805 - Charles McDowell begins publication of the Bedford Gazette newspaper. Today it is the oldest newspaper in continuous publication in Pennsylvania.

1807 - Everett glass plant begins production.

------------------------------

1814 - Post Office established at Bloody Run (Everett) with Philip Compher as postmaster

1817 - Davey Lewis escaped from Bedford County jail. He won the public's admiration as the "Robin Hood of Bedford County" after robbing a sheriff
of a poor widow's tax payment and returning the money to the widow.

1854 - Providence Township divided into East Providence and West Providence Townships.

------------------------------

1854 - The Foundry was established -  Rebuilt in 1874

 

1860 - The Borough of Bloody Run is incorporated. (Present day Everett)

1866 - Schoolhouse built on North Spring Street

------------------------------

1868 - Bedford County Press published at Bloody Run (now Everett) by J. C. Long. Later named the Everett Press, then the Bedford County Press again,
then the Bedford County Shopper's Guide.

1870 - The Bedford County Bank in Everett was founded.

------------------------------

1873 - Bloody Run officially changed its name to Everett, in honor of statesman and orator Edward Everett.

------------------------------

1880 - Everett Volunteer Fire Company established, with Gen. D.S. Elliot as chief engineer, and assistants D.V. Ott and John A. Gump.

------------------------------

1884 - A blast furnace for ironmaking began in Everett with ore from Black Valley. (The Earlston Furnace)

1885 - North Spring Street high school built

------------------------------

1885 - The Everett Glass Company founded

------------------------------

1885 - The Everett Bank is founded.

------------------------------

1889 - First two Everett High School graduates - Mary Pattigrew & S. Howard Gump

------------------------------

1894 - The Cottage Planing Mill Company was founded.

------------------------------

1894 - J. C. Chamberlain begins publishing the Everett Republican. The weekly newspaper stopped publishing in 1951.

1902 - First National Bank of Everett is founded.

1902 - Everett Railroad Station built

------------------------------

1904 - First automobile built in the county by A.M. and W.C. Karns of Everett.

------------------------------

1905- Hugh Tate first Everett baseball player to play in the major leagues.

------------------------------

1908 - Fire destroys the Tecumseh Tannery, a major industry in Everett.

------------------------------

1908 - Everett Bottling Company founded

------------------------------

1913 - Everett Cash Mutual Insurance Company is founded

1914 - Thropp RR Bridge was completed. 
------------------------------

1919 - 400 county residents die in influenza epidemic.

------------------------------

1923 - The Everett free Library Assoication was formed.

1923 - The Stuckey Theatre opens.

1924 - J. E. Thropp Co., a major blast furnace and foundry, stunned Everett by declaring bankruptcy.

1926 - The Everett High School Alma Mater written.

------------------------------

1930 - Fire destroys a block of downtown Everett.

------------------------------

1930 - Everett Hospital

------------------------------

1936 - St. Patrick's Day Flood, the worst disaster in Bedford County history. Hardest hit was Everett, with much of the town flooded by the waters of the Juniata River and Bloody Run.

1937-1938 - The present-day Everett Post Office built.

------------------------------

1938-1940 -  Building of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Pennsylvania Turnpike opens on October 1. The "father of modern highways" has interchanges


in Bedford and Breezewood.

1941- Everett VFW Band wins National Championship.

------------------------------

1941 - The Thropp Railroad removed.

------------------------------

1946 - Helen G. Barnett purchased the Everett Press.

------------------------------

1947 - Drenning Diner becomes Reed's Romar

1947 - Memorial Field built
------------------------------
1947 - Gulf Station built on the corner of Main and North Spring street.
------------------------------

1947 - McFarland's Furniture opens on West Main Street
------------------------------

1951 - Memorial Hospital of Bedford County opens on Route 30 between Bedford and Everett.

1951 - Acme Market opens on Main Street.

1955– New Everett Southern High School

------------------------------

1955 – South Penn Speedway opened.  Closed in 1971.  Ownership was changed and reopened in 1972 for two season.

1959 - The four-lane between Everett and Breezewood was opened.
------------------------------

1961 -  Tatesville Sand Plant closes.
------------------------------
1961  - United Telephone Company implements a dial-tone telephone service in Everett.
------------------------------
1962 - The Polly Clean Laundromat opened on the corner of Main and Water Street

------------------------------

1962 - The A&P building replaces the McClure building. Penn Hardware moves from the McClure building to the former Caro Motors building on South Street

1962 - Swiming area at the Sportsmen Club opens.

------------------------------

1963 – March 15, 1963 -Everett’s first radio station - WWDS

------------------------------

1963 - Everett Landmark (Gump/Farber building) was torn down

1965 - H-P Stores buy Maurices.

1966 - Ground breaking for the Rivers Bend Golf Course

1966 - The Everett VFW was formed in June 6 and was named in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Ellis R. Weicht

1967 - Grand Opening of Wolf Furniture

1967-  The US Hotel on West Main Street is torn down.

1968 – Everett Flood Project completed

1969 - Barkman Chevrolet destroyed by fire.

1970 - Travelers Rest Market opens

1971 - The Railroad excursion service by the Everett Railroad ended in 1971.

1972 - Undefeated Football Team

1975 - The Foundry made into an Art Studio.

1979 - September 9, new Everett elementary school dedicated

1980 - The Everett by-pass was opened.

1981 - Blue Triangle Hardwoods, Inc., established in Everett by Rossi Corp.

1983 - Everett RR freight service ended in 1983.

1983 - March, Paul Clark became Everett’s first state wrestling champion

------------------------------

1990 - Allegany College of Maryland opens a branch campus at Everett.

1990 - Ellis Weicht Bridge dedication

1990 - New addition to the high school

1993 - October 5, The Everett Area Alumni Association was formed

------------------------------

1997 - Bloody Run Historical Society formed.

------------------------------

1998 - Bedford County Memorial Hospital merges into the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center System (UPMC).

2012- Natalie Dell - Class of 2003 - Clearville, PA. 2012 Olympic Games, bronze medal in women's quadruple sculls (Rowing)

2023 - Medal of Honor Statue Dedication - Ellis Weicht and Robert Hartsock


2023- Lowers Pharmacy closes.
