1738 -The first known house built in Bedford County, was constructed by trader John Patton, in 1738. The house still stands in present-day Everett.  We are sure it has gone through some changes over the years.

Reprinted article on the Patton House and Naming Patton Street. Interesting.

Frank Dunkle Sr. made a reasonable request to Everett borough council Monday night, one that should get serious consideration.

As one of the more enduring Bicentennial projects of the town, Dunkle asked that an unnamed street on the western edge of the borough be named "Patton Street" after an early settler of the town, John Patton (sometimes spelled Paxton), a farmer, Indian trader, Indian agent, innkeeper, map maker and explorer in His Majesty's service.

The original structure built by Patton as an inn and trading center still stands at 223 Hillside Street and is being renovated by the Nial Crawford family, a worthy Bicentennial project in itself. Crawford, who lives in Lancaster, has done considerable research in tracing the original owner and use of the house. The least the town could do to recognize his efforts is to name a street leading to the historic house.

Crawford has discovered that John Patton, after repeated invitations from the Six Nations and approval from the council in Philadelphia, purchased a large tract of land on the Juniata at the juncture of the Raystown Path and the Warriors Path in March 1733. For this manor, which he called Aliquippa, he paid 29 pounds sterling per hundred acres and six years quick rent.

A month later Patton and his family moved to the manor. Shortly thereafter, they built a tavern and manor house. Aliquippa soon took on the appearance of a small village. Besides the tavern and manor house, there were such other buildings as a mill, blacksmith shop, stables, carriage house, smokehouse, storehouses, and a collection of six to eight cabins that served as residences for Patton's employees.

This little pocket of civilization in the forest served as the base camp for John Patton's fur trading business in the Ohio country.

Who knows, this may have been the first humankind to settle in what is now known as Everett. Such a historical gem certainly deserves a street name!.
